Redskins still sorting out kicker situation

The Washington Redskins still haven’t made a decision on their place-kicker for the 2010 season.

The team cut Sean Suisham last year after he missed a couple of chip-shot field goals, including a brutal miss that would have sealed up a huge, upset win over the New Orleans Saints.

Washington eventually brought in Graham Gano, who had lost the training camp kicking competition in Baltimore.

Gano was effective for the Redskins and also has a strong leg, but he didn’t do enough to lock up the job for 2010.

The team will look to bring in a veteran kicker that gets cut from another roster to compete with Gano for the job.

Moss’ future in Goodell’s hands

Washington Redskins head coach is confident that starting wide receiver Santana Moss won’t be disciplined by the NFL following the news that Moss allegedly received HGH from Canadien doctor Anthony Galea, who was accused of drug smuggling, conspiracy, lying to federal agents, unlawful distribution of HGH and introducing an unapproved drug into interstate commerce last week. Shanahan has said that he feels “very good” about the situation.

Moss, who was one of a handful of athletes who allegedly received HGH from Galea, has declined to comment on the story to the media, but told his teammates that he had no idea that the doctor was injecting him with HGH during the three times he was treated by him.

Still, the NFL could suspend Moss whether he knowingly took the HGH or not. Commissioner Roger Goodell has made it clear that he’s going to be proactive about disciplining players to maintain the integrity of his league. Multiple players, including star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, have been suspended without ever being found guilty of anything in the court of law.

In light of this story and the possibility that Moss, the team’s No. 1 receiver, could miss time this season, rumors have swirled about Terrell Owens joining the Redskins. The embattled Owens, who spent last season in Buffalo, has yet to find a home. It would be an interesting acquisition, reuniting him with quarterback Donovan McNabb, with whom Owens had a tenuous relationship during their season together in Philadelphia.

McNabb apologizes for not winning title with Eagles

Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb apologized for not winning a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.

McNabb took some of the blame for the team’s failure to get over that last hump and bring home a championship.

He expressed no bad feelings toward the Eagles organization or the fans of the city, saying he loves his time in Philly.

It’s clear that it frustrates and pains McNabb to be labeled as the guy who never could get it done when it mattered most.

While I’m sure McNabb would love to show he isn’t in decline and beat the Eagles twice next year, he has done an admirable job in taking the high road.

Redskins take Williams in first round

The Washington Redskins weren’t able to trade down but were more than happy to get tackle Trent Williams with the No. 4 overall pick.

The Redskins went with Williams over Okung because they feel he is a better fit for a zone blocking scheme.

Williams is very likely to come in and start right away for a Redskins offensive line that is in shambles.

Washington likes the fact that he has the versatility to play multiple positions but see him as their left tackle for many years to come.

The team was able to do little else in the draft after trading away other picks to get Donovan McNabb and Adam Carriker.

Redskins trade Campbell to Raiders

The Washington Redskins have traded quarterback Jason Campbell to the Oakland Raiders for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.

The Redskins have to be thrilled to receive such a high pick in return for Campbell, even if they don’t get to use it for another couple of years.

Campbell’s time in Washington had come to an end one way or another with the acquisition of star quarterback Donovan McNabb.

It was clear that Campbell was displeased with the way the organization had treated him and he wanted a chance to go somewhere else and start.

The Redskins never seem to have any draft picks, so getting one in 2012 in the middle rounds seems like a pretty good move for a player they could have just released.

Redskins trying to trade Haynesworth

The Washington Redskins have been trying desperately to trade defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

The team signed Haynesworth to a $100 million contract just over a year ago and already wants to run him out of town.

Other teams in the NFL certainly aren’t showing much interest even in a year with no salary cap.

There was so much excitement about bringing in Haynesworth, but I said it was a bad move all along.

The guy has never played a full season, is guilty of taking off plays and was given entirely too much money.

Redskins sign Grossman

The Washington Redskins have signed quarterback Rex Grossman to a one-year contract.

The deal means that Grossman will be reunited with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who spent time with Grossman last year with the Houston Texans.

Grossman has been much-maligned for most of his career despite the fact that he did help take the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl.

There has never been a question about Grossman’s physical tools, but he has shown time and time again that he lacks the intangibles to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

He comes in as a potential backup quarterback to starter Jason Campbell after the team let veteran Todd Collins go at the end of the season.

Head coach Mike Shanahan said that the team wants to promote competition, and Grossman has showed throughout his career that he can be a viable option at quarterback.

Redskins slap Campbell with first-round tender

The Washington Redskins have given quarterback Jason Campbell a first-round tender offer.

There has been much speculation this offseason whether or not Campbell would be back with the team next year.

It is now almost guaranteed he will return, as it’s hard to imagine someone giving up a first-round pick for his services.

It remains to be seen whether or not Campbell will remain the starter despite his likely return to Washington.

The Redskins are expected to draft a young quarterback, possibly with their early first-round selection.

Redskins may hold on to Campbell

Despite all of the criticism, the Washington Redskins might hold on to quarterback Jason Campbell for one more season.

Head coach Mike Shanahan wants to make finding a future quarterback a top priority, but seems to want to bring Campbell back.

The veteran could continue to play next year while the Redskins let a quarterback that they draft sit and watch.

It remains to be seen whether Campbell would even want to return after the heat he has taken from just about everyone, including teammates.

Ironically, the quarterback actually played pretty well down the stretch once Jim Zorn relinquished the playcalling duties.

RG Thomas Placed on IR

The Redskins’ starting right guard, Randy Thomas, suffered a season-ending tricep injury on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams in the ‘Skins 9-7 win.

This leaves the Redskins even shallower on an offensive line that lacked depth coming into the season. None of the five backups on the ‘Skins roster played an NFL snap last season.

Thomas suffered a complete tear of the right tricep muscle from the bone, which could end up being a career-ending injury for the 33-year-old offensive lineman. In 2007, he tore his left triceps and played in only three games. He had neck and knee surgeries in the offseason.

Along with Thomas, starting LT Chris Samuels has an injury history of his own with fragile knees.

The Redskins’ lack of consistency on the offensive line plagued them in the red zone, as they failed to score a touchdown against the lowly Rams. They have two potentially easy games coming up, with a trip to Detroit next week and Tampa Bay coming to town the week after.
